A truly international town, Detroit bears bragging rights as the only major US city with a view of Canada to the south. And with fantastically diverse areas such as Hamtramck and Greektown, you don’t have to cross the border to experience the exquisite flavors of many different cuisines. Whether you’re an urbanite or a nature lover or something in between, your Detroit wedding photographers will have plenty of fantastic places to capture the memories of your special day. The riverfront is one always-hot spot for fabulous engagement and wedding photos. Grab your Detroit wedding photographers (and your sweetheart) and take a River Walk stroll. Chat up some local fishermen, smooch by the shore and wave to Windsor (Canada). If you’re feeling fun, rent some bikes from the Wheelhouse and cruise along in style. For fabulous photos featuring Detroit’s iconic skyline, head to the 982-acre Belle Isle Park in the middle of the river. While you’re there, explore a bit. Take some photos near the historic Belle Isle Aquarium (now closed, but the building is still a beautiful backdrop). Or strike a pose in front of the famous Belle Isle Casino or the James Scott fountain (with Detroit’s city-scape in the background). For funky photos, check out the old Detroit Boat Club. The deteriorated whitewash and elegant arches lend character—especially to black and white pictures. If you’re craving that urban hip look for your wedding or engagement pic’s, the Museum of Contemporary Art might just do the trick. Located in an old car dealership on Woodward Ave, and covered in a graffiti tattoo, this place oozes toughness. Of course, downtown Detroit offers plenty of parks and public art to make you smile and keep your photographer busy. A perennial favorite for native Detroiters and tourists alike is Hart Plaza. Grab your Detroit wedding photographer and enjoy the festivities. If you’re planning a winter wedding or engagement photo session, lace up a pair of skates and take a whirl in the rink. Campus Martius Park with its stately Soldiers and Sailors monument, or the popular Grand Circus Park filled with leafy greens are two more photogenic spots in the area. For more photos with that true Detroit feel, consider hitting the Renaissance Center. Or, ask your Detroit wedding photographer to meet you in the world-renown theater district. Take a tour of the dozen-plus arts venues—and capture a bit of history while you’re at it with shots of the famous Fox Theater, the Fillmore and the Detroit Opera House. If you’re feeling fresh, head to Detroit’s Eastern Market. Have your Detroit wedding photographer snap some photos of you and your beloved sniffing flowers, picking produce and enjoying the crowds. For a more bookish wedding or engagement session, head to one of the Detroit-area institutes of higher learning such as Wayne State University or Marygrove College. Sports fans could consider incorporating a bit of Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons or Shock into a wedding or engagement photo session. Summon a smile in front of (or, if time and money allow—inside) your favorite venue. Stand by Joe Louis’ glove (at Joe Louis Arena) or wind up near Ty Cobb (at Comerica Park). If you’re looking for something with bit more green, consider the plentiful parks of Grosse Pointe. Windmill Point Park offers a nice promenade, a lighthouse and a chance to watch the big boats go by (you might need a park pass, however). Patterson Park is known for its great walking trails, superior winter sledding and fun ice rink. To pay homage to America’s Vets, to honor military service in the family or simply to add a bit of elegance to your special day, consider the beautiful grounds and buildings of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial for your wedding or engagement photos. The historic Italian-Renaissance home and grounds host many educational and cultural events however—so you’ll need to plan ahead! For some divinely romantic photos make an appointment to use the expansive grounds at the historic Edsel & Eleanor Ford House (photo fee $250). Stroll through the gardens with your sweetie, admire the beauty of Flower Lane and sneak a peaceful moment at Bird Island. Of course, there are many more wonderful options for great wedding and engagement sessions in the Detroit area—we simply don’t have space to list them all here! Talk with your Detroit wedding photographer about your photo ideas for your special day, and be sure that your photo locations fit the personalities of you and your fiancee. That way, your session will be so fun that you’ll forget the camera is even there. After all, it is your day and these are your memories! If you choose one of the Detroit Michigan wedding photographers, please let them know you found them on Best of Wedding Photography. Our members are some of the best Detroit wedding photographers.
