Bright and Airy Wedding Photographer

What Does it Mean to be a Bright and Airy Wedding Photographer?

Being a Bright and Airy wedding photographer is more than just a “shooting style”.  It’s also an editing style.  Consider it also a “mood”.  I love this style because it promotes cheeriness and happiness!  It’s also classic and will not go out of style.

Bright and Airy (and Light and Airy) is referring to photography that is the opposite of “Dark and Moody”.   And below are a few of the common characteristics that you can expect from a Light and Airy Photographer.

Characteristics of a Bright and Airy Wedding Photo:

  • Colors in the photos tend to lean more Pastel.
  • It’s shot in Natural Light
  • It often will be “less colorful”, by incorporating a more subtle color pallet.
  • Skys and Landscapes will not be as dramatic.

Here is a nice example of a Light and Airy photo taken by K. Lenox Photography

Being a bright and airy wedding photographer means that it’s crucial that we shoot in a certain way that allows us to hone in this beautiful style.   So the best time to shoot this way is early morning before just after the sun rises… and about an hour before sunset.   These times are when the light is softest and most flattering.   We also tend to shoot “wide open” which allows for us to achieve those creamy blurred out backdrops.

Considering your wedding at Caletas, Puerto Vallarta? You should read this!

As a wedding photographer, I documented many weddings in almost every part of Puerto Vallarta and surroundings. And there is one thing I must say: there is no other place like Caletas.

Picture this: a remote location that you can only acces by boat, surrounded by jungle on one side and pristine water and white sand on the other. Sounds appealing? Well, it is and it isn’t so if you are a couple and considering Caletas as your venue then read on!

How to access Caletas

As I mentionned in the intro of this post, Caletas is accessible only by boat and almost exclusively through Vallarta Adventures company. You can also take a private boat to Caletas but your presence will be restrained to the beach and you will not be able to access any of the facilities including bathrooms and restaurants.

Boat ride to Caletas Puerto Vallarta

Caletas, wedding venue, pros and cons

Con – You can’t hire who you want

First of all, you should know Caletas is ran by Puerto Vallarta gigantic tour operator called Vallarta’s Adventures. And despite the fact that Caletas is a piece of paradise, there are a few things that every couple should be aware of, before committing to getting married there.

First one is, you will have to hire their own team for everything. Everything means wedding planner, boat ride, catering, photographer and videographer. Now for most part, it is nice to have a full included service. It avoids a lot of stress and you only deal with one provider.

Yes, BUT, what if you don’t like some of their provider? What if you don’t like their photo or videos stylefor example and would like to hire a more artistic approach (like us for example ^^)? Well, it is possible but you will pay extra for it. It is not very fair, I know, but that’s the way it is.

Pro – The wedding planning and catering is actually good!

As far as the wedding organization and the food are concerned, I have to say I was impressed by both. The day was well organized by their team and the catering service was very decent. All of the staff was helpful and nice throughout the day. The only minor issue we experienced was that some security person would not let us fly the drone at our arrival (which the bride and groom had paid for). Finally that was fixed by a simple phone call by the planner!

Con – Not as private as it looks

Another thing you should know about Caletas is that it not as private as they advertise it to be. Part of the beach and wedding area is private yes but there is a lot of tourists moving around in the area (and I mean A LOT).

The reason why is because there is a tour to Caletas during the day, and a show Called Rythms of the night at night. It is not too much of a trouble but you should know that your party and the employees will not be the only people at Caletas and there will be tourists (and some noise that comes with them).

Big Pro – It’s tremendously beautiful!

Besides those two inconvenients, Caletas truely is what it looks like and even beyond.

The water is pristine clear and being in the jungle to get ready really feels amazing. It also offers plenty of awesome spot to take amazing photos and videos!

Your dreamy beach ceremony

Wedding at Caletas Puerto Vallarta
If you are dreaming of a beach ceremony, Caletas might just be the place you are looking for. The altar is set on a private beach exclusively reserved for the wedding party. So unlike other public areas in Puerto Vallarta, you will be the only people there during ceremony.

The ceremony itself is usually led by Vallarta Adventures wedding planner unless you would like to use your conductant which is totally possible.

A Real Wedding at Caletas

Christina & Ryan, a young couple from Langley, British Colombia, made the decision in 2018 to get married at Caletas. They found in love with the place and that it would be an amazing experience to share with their friends and family. They contacted us back in August 2018 after spending long hours reviewing portfolios and finally decided that they wanted our journalitic style to capture their event.

You can see their wedding highlight video here.

We warned them about the extra they may have to pay to bring us to Caletas but the memories that would be made that day were too important for them to be taken by some “random industrial photographer”. They even let us know that in the end, and despite the extra applied by Vallarta Adventures, our rates were just a bit over their own package and did not regret a single moment having made that decision. Following is a small selection of the pictures we crafted for them.

5 reasons to have a small wedding in 2020

Chelsea Register Office wedding photographer Douglas Fry5 reasons to have a small wedding in 2020

Later this month with any luck the government will allow small weddings in England and we thought we would highlight the reasons why small weddings can be the ideal solution for couples that had planned a large wedding but now have to downsize and rethink their celebration.

1. Social Distancing in a crowded space is very stressful.

Everyone has had the moment in the supermarket when pandemic etiquette goes into overdrive, the awkward hesitation, then exasperation, lunging and grabbing the quinoa and profusely apologising for closing the 3 meter hidden exclusion zone. Imagine this pressure at a wedding when everyone is on social tip toes anyway, it would all be too intense. Instead, how about half a dozen guests who are all of a similar mind set who can all have common sense and just relax and enjoy the ceremony and reception? Sounds much better…stress free

2. Growing Number of Venues

The number of venues on offer grows too, all the smaller quirky hotels and Register Offices from downtown Chelsea to a quaint hotel room are now on your shortlist. All the guests can easily drive there for the day or stay over, no need to worry about parking for 50 cars, or where the Portaloos may be placed out of sight, or the complex seating plan…Of course the wedding celebration can take place later in the year when there’s a chance things will be back to normal. Couples often decide to make the most of this opportunity to have portrait sessions taken in front of a number of London’s well known attractions, from China Town to Tower Bridge and St Paul’s. Hire a taxi and with a good driver I can shoot up to 10 locations in one day. It really does make for a dramatic and unique set of images.

3. Delay but Don’t Cancel the Celebration

Don’t let something like a pandemic put a stick in the spokes of a celebration that’s been in the planning stage for many months if not years, talk about an emotional deflation! Just go ahead on or as near as the original date, make it small and intimate wedding and postpone the wedding party till the following year with friends and family who can all then mingle and catch up on news in a much more relaxed atmosphere.

4. Cost Savings

Simple economics may play a significant role this year too, so perhaps it is sensible to keep the wedding in the diary but make it a simple affair with immediate family. Exchange the vows, have that first kiss and make sure the Prosecco is on ice. This will still be one of the most significant days of your life and one to remember foreve

5. Small Weddings are Romantic

Remember too, a small wedding is a romantic wedding, a large venue with 100 guests has melodrama certainly, but half a dozen people gathered around a couple exchanging vows in defiance of all the difficulties going on around the world right now and seeing the lasting long-term value of marriage can only restore the faith in human spirit in all of us.

Do hire a photographer, when the Prosecco and cake have all been quaffed and eaten, the one thing that will remind of these extraordinary times and the day you put all thoughts of vaccines and isolation to one side for a short while, will be your treasured photographs. Don’t let a family member feel obliged to get out their iPhone and witness the day through the back of a screen. Wedding photographs are worth every penny in the years to come, so make them good ones.
